Change is Constant

Focusing on What We Can Control

From Angela Hogan, CEO

Over the past year, I’ve been asked many variations of the question, “How are you holding up?”—most often in reference to shifts in federal funding and changing national priorities. While the question is well-intentioned, it has always struck me as a bit odd, as though the asker assumes I internalize forces entirely outside my control. If that were the case, I likely wouldn’t have remained in this field for the past 30 years.

Instead, I choose to focus on what is within my control. That means directing my energy away from uncontrollable concerns—such as others’ actions, the past, or global events—and toward my own choices, mindset, and responses. This approach centers on building resilience and taking meaningful, positive action in service of our community. As we head into the new year, my top priorities include:

  • Continuing to grow the enrollment, visibility, and recognition of Stars Academy as the premier Center for Early Education in Charlotte County, with a particular focus on strengthening the scholarship fund to ensure access for all families.
  • Standardizing procedures and building expertise within the Charlotte County Community Organizations Active in a Disaster (COAD) to ensure readiness for future challenges.
  • Deepening our commitment to developing and empowering local leaders, including increased support for the Charlotte County’s Youth Action Board and highlighting the exceptional work of business and community leaders through our annual breakfast.
  • Retooling the Homeless Response System with a stronger emphasis on income attainment through employment, access to mental health treatment, recovery from substance use disorders, and reduced lengths of stay.
  • Establishing education programs focused on Financial Literacy, Renter Rights & Responsibilities, and Homebuyer Preparedness.

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus famously said, “Change is the only constant in life.” The year 2025 certainly reflected that truth, and 2026 promises more of the same. I invite you to reach out and share your goals for the coming year. What lies within your control, and how can we partner to make it happen?
