A Legacy Built to Last: Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity

At the Gulf Coast Partnership, we know that sustainable change is only possible when dedicated organizations come together to serve a greater purpose. One of our most valued community partners, Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity, exemplifies this shared mission through its decades-long commitment to affordable housing and transformative impact in the lives of local families.

Since 1987, Charlotte County Habitat has empowered more than 580 families to achieve the dream of homeownership. With a 98% homeowner success rate and 91 cents of every donated dollar reinvested directly into programs, the organization stands as a model of transparency, efficiency, and mission-driven impact.

Habitat’s approach is comprehensive: building new homes, advocating for fair and just housing policies, and equipping families with the tools and education needed to maintain long-term housing stability. Homes are sold at affordable prices to qualified applicants who demonstrate both financial readiness and a willingness to partner with the organization through “sweat equity” and program participation.

Locally operated and funded—without financial support from Habitat for Humanity International—Charlotte County Habitat raises resources through strong partnerships with individuals, churches, and businesses. Its four thriving resale stores, located in Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, and Englewood, generate essential revenue that supports home construction across the county.

This year marks a significant milestone in the organization’s history as it celebrates the retirement of CEO Mike Mansfield, who has served Habitat for 22 years, including 18 as its local leader. Under Mike’s steady guidance, Charlotte County Habitat has grown in reach, deepened its local roots, and delivered hope and housing to hundreds of families.

Mike’s legacy is not only written in the homes built but, in the lives changed—through every family handed a key, every volunteer inspired to serve, and every dollar stewarded with care. His leadership has been a cornerstone of Charlotte County’s housing response, and his impact will continue to shape the future of affordable homeownership in our region.

The Gulf Coast Partnership extends our deepest gratitude to Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity and to Mike Mansfield for a legacy built with integrity, purpose, and unwavering dedication.
